Charity calling for support as cost-of-living bites

Frontline charity St Merkorious has made a special plea for support at its major fundraiser – the 2023 Day at the Bay – as demand grows rapidly for people dealing with the surge in the cost-of-living, including rental increases.

St Merkorious Charity’s mission is to relieve hunger and poverty by providing access to healthy food, clothing and essential items for day-to-day living.

The charity said the demand for its services had increased with people suffering rental stress following major price hikes.

“The pressure placed on rent has affected the health and nutrition of many individuals as they are cutting down on food and medication to make up for the increasing price of their rent,” theCharity said.

“For older individuals, they must aim to maintain healthy habits especially as they begin to get older and need to deal with other essential issues.”

The Day at the Bay is a major fundraiser for St Merkorious, with the event starting at 8:30am on September 2 at Leichardt Oval number 3, Maliyawul Street Lilyfield.

It will include lots of free activities, including the bay run/walk, rock climbing, entertainment and lunch.

The PAYCE Foundation is again a major sponsor of the event.

PAYCE Foundation Director Dominic Sullivan said: “We are pleased to continue our association with St Merkorious and Day at the Bay.”
“Without their work, many people would go hungry and spiral into a life of homelessness and poverty.

“The Day at the Bay is a wonderful, family event and I encourage everyone to come down and support it.”
